For those of you not in the know, the Pokemon VideoGame Showdown was the big event of the summer of 2008.
Similar in principle to the Journey Across America Tour a while ago and the Emerald Showdown in Seattle (I think) a couple years before that. The Pokemon VideoGame Showdown is arguably a result of an increase in serious competitive players around the world which has been reflected in recent pokemon games with the addition of a Battle Frontier in Emerald in addition to changes in the metagame brought about by new pokemon, new moves, and new items.
The Pokemon VideoGame Showdown culminated with an epic battle in Orlando, Florida on August 16, 2008 following two separate qualifying rounds, one in Los Angeles on July 14, 2008 and one in New York City on July 21, 2008. While unfortunately I was unable to attend the Orlando Showdown, I was able to get up to the NewYork City Showdown on the 21st. I myself didn't battle, my team's still sitting around waiting to get some breeding done at some point. I did however take some awesome pictures which will give you a first hand impression of how things went down. First off, the ShowDown took place in the Altman Building, not too far from Rockafeller Plaza where Nintendo World is. While certainly it was pretty cool and they had set things up pretty well, I kinda felt like they could have spent a bit more money on the event itself, convert a little more of the interior, hire a couple more people, etc. But I digress.

The ShowDown was divided up into several rounds for each age group. Competitors assembled inside of the fenced off area that you can see in the photos with the booths scattered around the inside. Each booth had two ds' mounted on it which the players would use to battle. Random checks for hacked cartridges were also performed by staff members.

Unfortunately my time was limited and I was not able to stay till the end of the showdown. On the to do list for the next tournament: Grab some video footage of some battles and interviews with participants.
